Early in the history of the cylinder music box, French and Swiss firms, offshoots of the clock industry, began making small music boxes as a cottage industry. Built by skilled artisans and engineers, the mechanisms were driven by spring motors operated with clock keys! These early, simple-cased boxes were lovely indeed, and are known as key-wind cartel music boxes. This example is by LeCoultre circa 1835-45, and has an 8-air Operatic programme. A lovely arrangement, in original, unrestored condition with no broken teeth or tips on the comb. A future owner may wish to repin the cylinder, or for now, enjoy the music!
